5 tips for squirrel removal yourself:
- trap – you can buy a trap at your local home improvement store, just be sure to put them on the outside of the home. NEVER inside, especially when squirrels are in the attic.
- relocate the trapped squirrel – although local laws may prohibit homeowners from relocating – be sure to find a place away from other neighborhoods, like a large park.
- food in the trap – squirrels like sunflower seeds, or any type of nut
- The best deterrent if squirrels are chewing wood or painted areas is to spread hot sauce over the areas they are chewing
- If you are unable to tell if there are baby squirrels, seek professional help. You don’t want to remove mom and have screaming babies stuck inside your home.
About Squirrels:
Did you know that squirrels are a member of the rodent family? Squirrels live in cavities in trees or make one from leaves and twigs near the top of a tree. Sometimes they find their way into your home/business, mostly in the attic space.
Squirrels can be quite a nuisance when they enter a dwelling and make their home in your family’s home. There are quite a few types of squirrels in the Ocean and Monmouth county area. The primary offenders are grey squirrels, red squirrels, chipmunks and flying squirrels.
Grey squirrels are those pesky fluffy ones that you see everywhere. They are the ones that feed on your bird feeders too. They normally leave the nest in search of food in the early morning hours. The pregnant squirrels like to find refuge in your attic space to protect their young.
Flying squirrels are those tiny little ones that are nocturnal feeders. Sometimes can be found as children’s pets, called sugargliders. And have been known to carry salmonella. Flying squirrels may not be noticed right away and trying to remove a whole colony may be more than the average homeowner can handle.
Squirrels, regardless of type, can wreak havoc in a home or office, they have been responsible for starting fires by chewing on electrical wires. Other damages include accumulated droppings, urine stains, chewing and gnawing on wood, and degradation of insulation.
Squirrels breed all year round but in New Jersey we see babies August through October and January to March. It becomes more difficult for the average do-it-yourselfer when babies are involved. The mother squirrel can be a little more unpredictable and the babies may not be able to recognize food. It’s best to have a professional help you.
